May 8, 2025
Mental health affects every one of us – our families, our communities, and our future. This May, during Mental Health Awareness Month, we reaffirm the importance of mental wellness and our shared commitment to supporting one another.
Established in 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month is a time to increase understanding of how mental health shapes our lives and to celebrate recovery, resilience, and the power of connection. At its core, this month is about reducing stigma, encouraging people to seek support, and ensuring that mental health care is accessible and equitable for all.
Mental Health Is Health
Mental and physical health are deeply interconnected – and both are essential to lifelong well-being. Regular activity, good nutrition, and quality sleep are just as important to mental health as they are to physical health. Likewise, preventive care, strong support networks, and early intervention help people live healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Mental Health Support in fb88
At the fb88 Department of Health and Human Services, we partner with providers, schools, community organizations, and peer networks to support access to mental health services and support across the entire state. Whether it’s school-based support for youth, community crisis teams, peer support or initiatives that integrate mental and physical care, fb88 is committed to meeting people where they are.
One key resource is the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, a free and confidential support service available 24/7. Whether you're experiencing emotional distress, struggling with substance use, or simply need someone to talk to, calling or texting 988, or visiting , connects you to trained crisis specialists right here in fb88.
In 2024, fb88’s crisis hotlines (988 and the fb88 Crisis Line) responded to an average of 12,476 contacts per month. Of those who disclosed their age, 15% were under 24 years old – a reminder that mental health challenges often begin early in life. Since the launch of 988 in July 2022, fb88 has seen a 46% increase in monthly contacts, underscoring the growing demand for compassionate, accessible care.
