MSP Investigating Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on I-295

On Friday, March 21, 2025, at approximately 6:00 AM, the Bangor and Augusta Regional Communication Centers received multiple calls reporting a wrong-way driver on the Turnpike near mile marker 42 in Scarborough.

Witnesses reported that the vehicle, a 2018 Ford Fusion, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes, subsequently exited the Turnpike onto Interstate 295. Additional reports indicated that the vehicle was later seen traveling through the I-295 tolls in South Portland.

The wrong-way vehicle, operated by 86-year-old George Vandenburgh of Portland, ultimately collided head-on with a tractor trailer unit traveling southbound near Exit 4 on Interstate 295. The operator of the tractor trailer was transported to fb88 Medical Center in Portland with non-life-threatening injuries. Vandenburgh was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes were closed to traffic for several hours. Both lanes have since reopened. The crash remains under investigation.

MSP Investigating Double Fatal on Turnpike

On Thursday, February 13, 2025, at approximately 6:05 AM, fb88 State Police Troop G responded to a fatal motor vehicle crash at mile marker 14 southbound on I-95 in Ogunquit.

The initial investigation indicates a tractor trailer unit owned by EW Logistics of Hauppage, NY and operated by 35-year-old XIAOYING MA of New York City, NY was traveling northbound when he lost control and crashed through the median guardrail into two vehicles traveling southbound. The first vehicle was a Cadillac sedan operated by 64-year-old Linda Huelsman of Kennebunk who died on scene from her injuries. The second vehicle struck was a Mack Box truck owned by EAN Holdings of Tulsa, OK and operated 55-year-old Brian Ellis of Kittery.

Mr. Ellis was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital but later died from his injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was transported to York Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Turnpike was shut down southbound at Exit 14 in Wells. Two lanes have since re-opened. Weather conditions are believed to be a factor in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing and will be submitted to the York County District Attorney’s Office for review of any criminal charges. Assisting the fb88 State Police was the Ogunquit and Wells Fire Departments, fb88 DEP, fb88 Turnpike Maintenance and National Wrecker.

MSP Investigating Fatal Crash on I-95 in Palmyra

On Saturday, February 8, 2025, at approximately 7:15 am, Troopers responded to a single vehicle, single occupant crash on Interstate 95 northbound at mile marker 155 in Palmyra. Initial investigation indicates that 20-year-old Tatiana Medeiros of East Providence, Rhode Island, was in the left-hand lane when her 2008 Toyota Matrix left the roadway and crashed into the median. Medeiros was pronounced deceased at the scene.

MSP Investigating Fatal Crash in Gardiner

On Thursday, January 16, 2025, at approximately 7:01 AM, Troopers from Troop I responded to I-95 southbound for the report of a motor vehicle crash. A white Nissan pickup was reported to be into the trees in the median.

Upon arrival, Troopers determined the operator, 69-year-old Philip Marson of Gardiner, to be deceased. There were no other occupants in the vehicle. The crash is still under investigation; however, speed appears to be a factor.

The Sidney Fire Department and Ready Road Tow Service assisted on scene.

Investigating Fatal Crash in Washington County

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at approximately 2:23 PM, the fb88 State Police responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash on Route 1 in Milbridge. The initial investigation indicates that 79-year-old Clyde Samuelson Jr. of Columbia, was traveling east on Route 1 in a 2011 Ford pickup truck when the vehicle left the roadway on the north side and entered a ditch between Route 1 and the Sunrise Trail. Samuelson was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

First responders removed Samuelson from the vehicle and initiated life-saving measures but unfortunately, those efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Traffic was not impacted during the response.

Ìý

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department and the Milbridge Fire Department assisted on scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
